Fagor Multimedia Solutions - IoT Nodes in Smart Buildings
Fagor Multimedia Solutions and IoT Nodes in Smart Buildings
Fagor Multimedia Solutions seeks to position itself at the forefront of innovation in smart building technologies through the development of IoT (Internet of Things) nodes, which enable the building as the basic information cell of the city. These devices not only help to optimise energy efficiency and resource management, but also improve the safety and comfort of users. For example, by monitoring air quality, temperature and humidity inside buildings, or even tracking the occupancy of different areas within a building, allowing for more efficient space management and resource planning.
Jesús Gómez Río, head of R&D at Fagor Multimedia Solutions, explains the benefits offered by the incorporation of IoT nodes and gives us the keys to the company's strategic commitment in a framework that represents an interesting opportunity for innovation and growth for this industry, that of the Smart City.
What are IoT nodes and what are they used for?
Fagor Multimedia Solutions is working on the development of IoT nodes, one of the key technologies for smart buildings.
In the world of IoT or Internet of Things, the node would be that bridge, so to speak, that helps us connect the physical world with the virtual world, with the internet. In this case, an IoT node is a device assigned to a building, and its surrounding areas, which acts as an intermediary between the sensors that measure the dynamic parameters of the building, and the external world, both centralised management platforms, such as Smart Cities, or third-party applications aimed at optimising resources or security. The IoT node aggregates data from various sensors, prepares the information, processes it and transmits it for analysis and decision-making.
What do IoT nodes need for optimal operation in smart buildings?
Connectivity from the IoT node to the sensors is a crucial aspect for the effective operation of IoT nodes in smart buildings. Fagor Multimedia Solutions' IoT nodes allow the integration of devices equipped with communication technologies such as 5G, LoRaWAN, Bluetooth, or WiFi into the building's IoT network. This flexibility allows integration with a wide range of sensors and devices, facilitating the transmission of real-time data to centralised management platforms.
How can information collected from different sources be effectively integrated and analysed?
An effort has been made to define semantics for the IoT Node that follow the harmonised rules of Smart Cities, and that allow data from different sensors to be homogenised in an IoT node. Using harmonised definitions and data structures allows data collected by different sensors to be understood and interpreted in a consistent way. This ensures that information can be effectively integrated and analysed from external platforms or applications, facilitating interoperability.
The use of open semantic standards allows the definition of a common vocabulary to describe sensor data. By adopting these standards, Fagor Multimedia Solutions guarantees that its IoT nodes are fully integrable not only with the Fagor platform, but also with the systems of other manufacturers.
We believe that one of the key factors in the success of this product is the integration of our products with a centralised management platform. Compatibility with platforms such as FagorChorus allows us to centrally manage all sensors and devices, ensuring efficient and safe operation.
What are the benefits of installing IoT nodes in Smart Buildings?
We could group them into three main blocks: those related to energy efficiency, safety and comfort, and resource management.
- Energy efficiency: IoT nodes allow us to accurately manage lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. By offering the option of using actual measurements of the building's current parameters, we can automatically adjust these systems according to occupancy and environmental conditions, resulting in significant energy savings.
- Safety and comfort: IoT nodes improve building security by integrating access control, surveillance and pollution control systems. They provide a more comfortable environment by adjusting indoor conditions in real time according to occupants' needs.
- Resource management: IoT nodes monitor and manage the use of resources such as water and electricity, contributing to more sustainable and efficient building management. This is crucial to comply with environmental regulations and reduce operating costs.
Environmental Regulations and Compliance
FMS has been one of the driving forces behind the regulations that the IoT node must comply with. By complying with the UNE 178104 and UNE 178108 standards, we guarantee that IoT solutions are safe, efficient and sustainable, promoting wider adoption in the Smart Buildings market.
Concrete Applications of IoT Nodes in Smart Buildings
IoT nodes can monitor the fill level of waste containers, optimising collection routes and reducing operational costs, or detect problems such as container fires, improving safety. Using sensors connected to IoT nodes, it is also possible to monitor and control air quality, temperature and humidity inside buildings. This not only improves comfort, but also contributes to the health of the occupants. IoT nodes also make it possible to track the occupancy and usage of different areas within a building, allowing for more efficient space management and resource planning.
The New State Regulation on ICT
The new regulation on ICT (Common Telecommunications Infrastructures) represents an opportunity for FMS to lead the connected building market. Elements such as the IoT node will play a significant role, allowing FMS to enter the world of the connected building in the framework of the smart and sustainable city. The analysis of data provided by the node will enable optimised electricity consumption, personalised user experiences, and increased opportunities for servitisation.
Expected Outcomes from IoT Nodes in Smart Buildings
FMS is a major player in the telecommunications infrastructure sector in buildings and expects to position itself as an IoT node leader, leveraging its experience in the sector, and its technological power. With IoT nodes, we aim to:
- Contribute to the improvement of energy efficiency and sustainability.
- Increase automation and control, preparing buildings for future applications.
- Generate new business opportunities linked to the building, creating added value for the user or owner.
- Reduce operational costs of current systems.
